Spotlight on Joyce’s Mother Violet

Featuring Da Vinci Paint’s Mother Violet, one of our newest watercolors and perfect for painting stormy skies, splashy florals, and lively landscapes. Created in partnership with Artist Joyce Hicks as one of her signature palette colors, this exclusive blend of three pigments produces a violet that’s softly transparent and granulates into an exemplary array of colors.

Joyce is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and is known for her peaceful, reflective compositions filled with strong, colorful contrasts. Mother Violet watercolor was developed to capture the soft elements of simple, unassuming beauty in Joyce's paintings and to help you achieve that look in your paintings also.

In Joyce's graceful style of painting, a Mother Violet wash is applied to areas and then additional colors are gently dropped into the wash and allowed to mix directly on the page. This technique eliminates muddy colors and allows each contrasting shade to shine.

At Da Vinci, we carefully developed Mother Violet's three-pigment blend to also work well when premixing colors and provide a layer of exciting and sometimes unpredictably beautiful granulation. All of the colors in the above examples can be found in Joyce's Signature and Mother Violet palettes.

Mother Violet is available exclusively at Da Vinci Paints. Visit our website to find more information and videos on how Joyce uses Mother Violet, and achieve the signature look that Joyce’s paintings are known for with her curated Da Vinci watercolor palettes.
