All About Da Vinci Ultramarine Blue
One of the most prized blues for centuries that once fetched a price higher than gold, Ultramarine Blue is considered by many artists to be the quintessential blue in a palette. Da Vinci’s professional-grade ultramarines are warmly transparent with high tinting strength, making Da Vinci Ultramarine perfect for use in masstone or mixes.
Da Vinci Paints is proud to offer a choice of artist-quality ultramarines for your palette, so have fun picking one... or three!
Ultramarine Blue Artist Watercolor
When it comes to watercolor mixes, Da Vinci Ultramarine deserves a blue ribbon. Revered by landscape painters because of its usefulness in depicting skies, seas, and everything in between including a plethora of greens, Ultramarine is also extremely useful for creating rich darks, bold violets, soft browns, transparent teals, and more.
Triple the Watercolor Fun
Da Vinci Paints offers artists several choices of professional-grade Ultramarine Blue watercolors. All of our ultramarine blues are made from the highest grade of pigment blue 29, or PB29, but each is carefully manufactured and handled to produce slight differences which result in variations between colors.
Ultramarine Blue Warm red undertones with light to moderate granulation make this color the gold standard in ultramarines.
Ultramarine (Green Shade) Slightly cooler than Ultramarine with less red-violet undertones, Ultramarine Green Shade also has the least granulation which makes it more muted in mixes.
French Ultramarine (Red Shade) A very warm violet ultramarine with light to moderate granulation, French Ultramarine can be beautifully textural in mixes, often displaying surprising results.
Please note that granulating and mixing properties depend upon many factors including dilution, paper, etc.
Ultramarine Blue Artist Oil Paint
Professional-grade Da Vinci Ultramarine oil paint is richly transparent with slight reddish undertones. This warm undertone often displays a soft violet tint when mixed with white – one of the many reasons Ultramarine Blue is prized for painting skies.
With its high pigment load and buttery consistency, Da Vinci Ultramarine is appropriate for all types of applications - in masstone, for glazing, and in underpaintings. Da Vinci Ultramarine is available in three convenient sizes: a portable 37mL tube, a studio-sized 150mL tube, and an economical 300mL cartridge.
Da Vinci Ultramarine oil paint is extremely adaptable in mixes and can easily serve as a solo blue in a limited palette. Useful for creating a wide variety of blues, from light to dark, along with verdant greens, striking violets, transparent teals, and ample earths, Ultramarine is also a common palette pick for mixing a massive range of neutrals and darks, from warm to cool.
