Spotlight on Da Vinci Titan Buff

Da Vinci Paints is excited to share one of our newest watercolors, Titan Buff. As a stand-alone color, Titan Buff is softly opaque with a slight granulation and neutral warmth that easily dilutes into various shades of grayed ivory. While absolutely beautiful on its own, Titan Buff is a natural performer in mixes, able to soften, warm, and opacify nearly every other color in a palette.

Handcrafted with a special version of Pigment White 6 (PW6) known as Buff Rutile Titanium Dioxide, Titan Buff’s natural coloration comes from a small percentage of iron oxide that’s purposely left behind in the manufacturing process. We combine this high-quality pigment with nothing less than the finest gum arabic which allows Titan Buff’s natural characteristics to shine.

Perfect for landscape painting and nature sketching, Titan Buff is the color of sandy seashores and desert dunes, autumn mushrooms and hay fields, pampas grass plumes and lamb’s wool. Able to easily mix into warm tans and muted violets or blues along with soft peaches and roses, Titan Buff’s features also work wonders for portrait and floral painters.

When used solo, there’s more to Titan Buff than initially meets the eye. While technically categorized as a “white,” Titan Buff showcases a wide color range in dilution along with various levels of granulation that settle beautifully on a page. Although Titan Buff is surprisingly dynamic as a stand-alone color, Titan Buff is easy going and congenial in mixes, often infusing the mix with a bit of fun granulation yet never losing its calming affect.

Try Titan Buff mixed with Payne’s Gray to produce colors akin to storm clouds and dusky atmospheres. Combine with a blue like Ultramarine or Seaglass to add a touch of smoke and boost granulation. Mixed with Alizarin Crimson or Perylene Maroon, Titan Buff creates soft rose tones and burgundies that are reminiscent of Rubens’ cheeks and lips.

When Titan Buff is blended with earth colors like Burnt Umber or Raw Sienna or greens like Sap or Olive, it becomes a landscape painter’s best friend, allowing one to push and pull the colors of nature into softer and more natural directions at will. A fun technique is to paint an initial wash with Titan Buff and then drop in or splatter colors to create overall warmth or natural effects like in the illustration above.

Titan Buff is available in 8mL, 15mL, and 37mL tube sizes. Visit our website to shop Titan Buff along with Da Vinci Paint's full range of artist colors.
